THE FAM

La Mif. Switzerland 2021. Director: Fred Baillif. Screenplay: Fred Baillif. 110 Min. Fiction. Language: French. Subtitles: English. OV w/Eng. sub. Suitable from age 12. Recommended from age 15.

A residential care home in Geneva is a family replacement for the girls living there – but also the setting of explosive conflicts. The film tells its protagonist’s stories episodically. Being so close to the adolescents you cannot shake of the impression of watching a documentary. But it is fiction: THE FAM was developed over two years in close collaboration with the ensemble, reinforcing the authentic impact of this harsh but also empathetic film. In differing perspectives THE FAM depicts the young women’s situation and reflects the weaknesses of society’s fragile social and political structures, which are supposed to catch these kids. The film strikes at the heart.
